Indoor Festival of Folk (North)

  • Settle Victoria Hall 24 Kirkgate Settle, England, BD24 9DZ United Kingdom (map)

Featuring The Magpie Arc, Frankie Archer, Edgelarks, Sam Carter, The Bookshop Band and Ashley Hutchings in conversation with Matthew Bannister.

Come All Ye for a day-long autumn feast of folk, food, facilities and a nice sit down all in the company of some of the country’s finest folk musicians. Settle Victoria Hall and The Magpie Arc are delighted to announce that the line-up for the very first Indoor Festival of Folk (North) on Saturday the 18th of October are the collectively superb and award-winning Edgelarks, The Bookshop Band, Sam Carter, Frankie Archer, The Magpie Arc  AND “The Guv’nor” of all things British folk rock, Ashley Hutchings, who in his 80th birthday year will be BBC presenter and Folk On Foot podcaster Matthew Bannister’s special interview guest.

  • Frankie Archer has exploded onto the folk scene with music that transcends stereotypes using a combination of manipulated samples, synths, drum tracks and earthy Northumbrian fiddle and voice to capture her audience. Her aim? To shake up genres and traditions, challenge perspectives and call for a fairer future. Winner of the 2023 Christian Raphael Prize, Frankie has been featured on ‘Later… With Jools Holland’ and championed by tastemakers at BBC Radio 2 and 6Music with her unique live set turning heads wherever she goes.

  • Described by BBC 6 Music as "extraordinary" the Radio 2 Folk Award winners Hannah Martin and Phil Henry push the boundaries of the folk genre, combining influences as diverse as Indian classical and American blues with their British trad roots and original songwriting to produce a sound like no other.

  • Fresh from the release of their latest album produced by Pete Townshend of The Who (who described them as "a great discovery and inspiration") The Bookshop Band are the truly unique musical offspring of an artistic love-affair between award-winning folk songwriters, Beth Porter and Ben Please, and independent bookshop Mr B’s Emporium of Reading Delights. As their name suggests they derive their songwriting inspiration from books and  inspired by hundreds of authors from Shakespeare to Philip Pullman have released 13 studio albums featuring many of the authors they have worked with.

  • As Bob Dylan simply said "Ashley Hutchings is the single most important figure in English folk rock." Founder member of and driving force behind Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span and The Albion (Country) Band in the highest musical circles he is simply called "The Guv'nor" and his vision of what electric folk music should be and sound like has helped shape British popular music for almost 60 years. In this his 80th birthday year Ashley will be the very special interview guest of Matthew Bannister.

  • Sam Carter is a BBC Folk Award-winning singer-songwriter and guitarist with over 15 years as a professional recording artist and international touring musician under his belt. Over the course of his career, he has earned a reputation for vivid, narrative-driven songwriting ‘as penetrating as Richard Thompson’s best work’ (Uncut). A highly regarded instrumentalist, Sam has been described as 'the finest English-style fingerpicking guitarist of his generation' by Bellowhead’s Jon Boden, and as having a ‘killer voice’ by Ivor Novello- winning musician Nitin Sawhney.

  • “The Magpie Arc is a cross-border band from Sheffield, Edinburgh and Arran and features award-winning musicians Nancy Kerr, Findlay Napier, Tom Wright, Alex Hunter and tour guitarist, BBC Folk Award-winning Sam Carter . Formed to blend their songwriting and musicianship into a fresh take on the British folk rock sound of the ’60s and ’70s, the band quickly gained recognition for its unique mix of folk, rock, country, and prog-rock elements. T heir debut album, Glamour In The Grey (2022), spent 12 months on the UK Official Folk Chart, debuting at number 9 and Mojo magazine compared it to Fairport Convention’s ground-breaking 1969 release, calling it “Liege and Lief-affirming” with “an elemental racket.”  Mark Radcliffe described The Magpie Arc on BBC Radio 2 as “Folk Rock with Led Zeppelin vibes” and Spiral Earth magazine noted “You owe it to yourself to catch this band as soon as you can. Capability, flair and originality rarely come so well wrapped.”
